Treatment of Exertional Myopathie (formerly known as 'PSSM2')

Acute Symptoms

It is only possible to treat symptoms:

  • Stabling, with as much controlled movement as the horse’s condition will allow; avoidance of transport
  • Fluid supplementation
  • Pain relief
  • Anti-inflammatory treatments
  • Muscle relaxants

Long-term approaches

Genetic defects cannot be cured, but in complex, multifactorial diseases such as Exertional Myopathy/Muscle Integrity Myopathy, it is possible to adjust the environmental conditions (feeding, training/exercise, handling) so that these can help mitigate the influence of the defective proteins.
