Breed Analysis for Horses

With generatio's Breed Analysis for Horses, you can uncover which breeds and breed groups have shaped your horse's genetic makeup – and which specific breed your horse most closely resembles. You'll gain valuable insights to understand your horse's appearance and behavior better.

Whether you're seeking targeted training approaches or want to know your horse better, this breed analysis provides previously unavailable information about your animal’s genetic background.

Unique Aspects of Horse Breeds

Unlike dog breeding, horse breeding often does not focus on developing breeds with clearly defined, distinct characteristics. Purebreeding over many generations, resulting in fully closed studbooks, is found only in a few “distinct breeds”, such as the Thoroughbred, Friesian, or Arabian horse. These breeds exhibit a very characteristic genomic makeup, and their breed-specific components can be clearly identified in the analysis.

Other well-known horse breeds are intentionally bred using open or partially open studbooks. In these cases, breeders are allowed to introduce new lines to improve traits such as conformation, performance, or temperament. A horse’s breed designation here is based on registration in a particular studbook or recognition by a breeding association. These “breeds” often reflect geographic origin (e.g., Oldenburg, Württemberger), specific usage (e.g., Trotter, Draft Horse), body type (e.g., Pony, Coldblood), or a combination of these (e.g., Riding Pony, Black Forest Coldblood).

On the genomic level, these horse breeds overlap yet show characteristic patterns due to their specific breeding goals. This allows us to group them into breed groups – clusters of breeds that share similar physical traits, usage, and genetic characteristics. These groups are distinct from both each other and the genetically unique “distinct breeds.”

To reflect these specific features of horse breeding, the breed analysis report consists of two parts:
