DNA programmes

Purpose of a DNA Programme

DNA programmes are designed to establish and utilize DNA information within the animals of a given animal population.
Depending on the form of organization, we distinguish 2 types of programmes:

  • Programmes of breeding clubs with predefined requirements and central administration
  • Decentralized, open programmes on individual animal species/breeds, where there is no central office.

Many of the breed clubs we serve run such programmes for the breeds they manage to ensure identity and pedigree.
Depending on the needs of the individual animal, additional examinations are carried out for predispositions (hereditary diseases and traits).

Genetic proof of origin

generatio’s unique progeny registration system is based on sample archiving in combination with mandatory identity profiling of their parents. A GOcard sample from each pup in a litter is submitted to generatio to provide the most reliable and cost-effective approach in archiving. This concept allows genetic proof of origin without the need to type each individual by a DNA Profile. Depending on the number of offspring of a breeding animal, the costs for the individual animal are reduced to few Euros. When tests are required for specific animals in the future, the archived samples can be activated and tested.

DNA approved parentage

The only way to assure accurate pedigrees is to have DNA-based parentage testing. The long- term and consistent use of parentage confirmation over generations leads to completely verified ancestry in the issued pedigrees. An outstanding example of this is the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (German Shepherd Dog Association). For 20 years, all breeding animals have been subject to DNA-tested pedigree confirmation.

Research

The success of research is largely based on the proper organization of the animals and the collection of data that feeds into the scientific studies.

Our Animal Trust Center is the optimal Internet platform for DNA Programs to collect such information. Animal owners have access to their animals' online animal files and can directly contribute to the studies via questionnaires and other data.  Private initiatives can also be established to allow groups of owners to organize their own investigations.
