Breeding History

The Andalusian is known as the typical Spanish horse. The breeding history of these horses dates back to the 3rd century. They are closely related to the Barb horse and were later refined through the infusion of Arabian and English Thoroughbred blood. In 1912, the pure Spanish horses were officially separated into their own breeding line. Horses may only be designated as Pura Raza Española (PRE) if their lineage can be traced back to recognized Spanish breeding lines. Horses without official documentation are classified simply as Andalusians.

Breeding

The studbook for the Pura Raza Española (PRE) is closed, meaning that only purebred P.R.E. horses can be registered for breeding. Breeding is conducted strictly by the principle of purebreeding, with no crossbreeding allowed. These strict breeding regulations ensure that the characteristic features and genetic purity of the breed are preserved across generations. Horses whose lineage cannot be definitively proven are referred to as Andalusians.

Exterior (Appearance)

The Andalusian (P.R.E.) has a strong, compact, and well-muscled build. The chest is deep and broad, and the back is pronounced and slightly sloping. The neck is sufficiently long and well arched. The withers are clearly defined and set apart from the back.

The head is finely shaped. The eyes are large, dark, and expressive. The ears are medium-sized and mobile, and the nostrils are wide.
Andalusian/PRE horses typically have a square build with clean lines and harmonious proportions. A characteristic feature of the breed is the dense, long-growing mane and full tail.

Interior (Temperament)

The Andalusian/PRE is known for its friendly and calm temperament. In addition, the breed is characterized by high willingness to learn, intelligence, and a strong bond with humans.

Hereditary Diseases

Currently, there are no breed-specific hereditary diseases known in the Andalusian (P.R.E.).
