Is there anything I need to be aware of when collecting samples if my horse is on medication?

If you are applying a topical medication onto the skin around the mane or tail, this can affect the DNA extraction process on hair taken from those areas. In this case it may be better to send a blood sample. If this is not an option, you can wash the area well, let it completely dry, and then collect the hair; however remaining residue may still affect the extraction process.

It may also be possible to extract DNA from horse body hair if it is pulled (not shed) but more material is required because the roots are very small. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
