We are delighted to announce that the first DNA certificates with individual ID profiles based on SNP markers have been successfully awarded to the Old World camels that participated in our initial testing! This is a very significant step towards the conservation and research of camel genetic diversity.
In collaboration with the Altweltkamele e.V., we conducted an international study and tested dromedaries and Bactrian camels using 60,000 genetic markers.
By analyzing this data, we were able to create a set of significant genetic markers that enables the clear identification and differentiation of individuals at the DNA level. This ID profile allows not only the identification of the camels, but also the investigation of kinship relationships with other genetically recorded camels.
The comprehensive study has also provided interesting insights into the genetic diversity of the camel population studied. The project was also scientifically supported by the Vetmeduni in Vienna and the IAEA/FAO, and a publication of interesting results is in preparation.
We would like to thank all participating breeders, the Altweltkamele e.V. and all other participants worldwide.
A big thank you goes to Gabriele Heidicke from Altweltkameleverein, who helped initiate and drive the project forward. She can be seen in the picture with her camels, which have received their first certificates.
